Designing for material

Textile design is the development of visual and structural ideas for fabric. It can shape how a textile looks, feels, repeats and performs in a product.

Unlike an image that lives only on a screen or page, a textile design must respond to material, scale, production and use.

Surface and structure

Surface design includes printed, dyed and embroidered outcomes. Structural design changes the fabric itself through weaving, knitting or other construction methods.

Many textile products combine both: a considered fabric structure with colour, pattern or surface detail.
